The movie kicks off with Logan getting nuked in Nagasaki like it’s just another bad day at the office. The scene closely mirrors a moment from the Chris Claremont/Frank Miller Wolverine comic, where our favorite feral X-Man gets obliterated and starts regenerating mid-annihilation. Because not even an atomic bomb can keep this crazy canuck down. 4. Tao Okamoto, who played Mariko, joined the film partly because she had a teenage crush on Hugh Jackman after seeing him in the first X-Men movie. By that logic, I should’ve starred in a movie with Drew Barrymore by now. 3. The Silver Samurai battle was all CGI, thanks to WETA, but here’s the cool part—there was actually a real 9-foot-tall, fully poseable mechanical prop made from over 600 individually designed parts. It was built using cutting-edge rapid prototyping tech, which is just a fancy way of saying big nerd magic. 2. Hugh Jackman is notorious for his extreme diets when prepping for Wolverine—high calories, tons of protein, basically all the chicken breast in existence. His ex-wife even said that his diet put him in a mood that was way too close to his character. So yeah, a hungry Wolverine is a grumpy Wolverine. Somebody get this man a Snickers. 1. To get that extra shredded look for his shirtless scenes, Jackman went on a dehydration diet, cutting out all liquids for 36 hours before filming. He said it made him feel "headachy" and faint, but hey, sacrifices gotta be made if you want peak ab visibility. And let’s be honest, the ladies definitely didn’t mind his hard work. Just four months before filming, Coca-Cola bought Columbia Pictures and freaked out over the movie's budget. They wanted to axe it, but Columbia CEO Frank Price didn’t like being told what to do. Just before quitting, he gave director Ivan Reitman full creative control and saved the day! 4. Peter Venkman was originally written for the late John Belushi; in a weird twist of fate, Dan Aykroyd was actually writing a line for Belushi when he got the call about his friend’s death. Bill Murray took over the role, but Belushi still got to cameo—in a way—as the inspiration for Slimer. 3. The first design of the library ghost was so terrifying it got scrapped. Vic Mackey's iconic Polo Sport shades were a happy accident. The first day of filming was bright and Michael Chiklis didn’t have any sunglasses so he snagged a pair from a nearby bodega for $5. 3. Claudette was originally a man named “Charles” in the pilot script. When C.C.H. Pounder’s manager pushed for her to get an audition, she crushed it and creator Shawn Ryan immediately made the change. 2. The fisticuffs between Mackey and Kavenaugh at Lem’s murder scene was a little more real than intended. Equal parts miscommunication and misunderstanding, Chiklis’s shoulder smashed into Forest Whitaker’s face who responded by busting Chiklis’s lip. Nobody was seriously injured and the two were cool a few days later. 1. At 42 seconds long, the pause before Mackey gives his confession in the penultimate episode is one of the series’ heaviest moments.
